Bike Theft in Gloucestershire

Bike theft is one of the most common crimes in Gloucestershire. Thousands of bicycles are stolen every year across the county, with many going unrecovered. Taking simple precautions can significantly reduce your risk and help us reunite stolen bikes with their owners.

🔒 How to Secure Your Bike

  • Always lock your bike, even if leaving it for just a moment.
  • Use a high-quality D-lock or chain lock — avoid cable locks, which can be cut in seconds.
  • Lock the frame and at least one wheel to a fixed, immovable object.
  • Choose well-lit, busy areas with CCTV when parking in public.
  • Remove accessories such as lights, bags, and quick-release wheels when leaving your bike unattended.
  • If storing at home, secure your bike indoors or to a wall anchor in your garage.

📋 Register Your Bike

Registering your bike dramatically increases the chances of it being returned to you if stolen. You can register your bike on this site using your account, or with national schemes such as:

  • BikeRegister — the UK's largest cycle database, used by all police forces.
  • Immobilise — a free national property register.

Make a note of your bike's serial number (usually found under the bottom bracket), take photos, and keep a record of its make, model, and colour.

⚠️ What to Do If Your Bike Is Stolen

  • Report it to us as soon as possible — early reports improve recovery chances.
  • Provide your bike's serial number, description, and any photos you have.
  • Check local online marketplaces such as Facebook Marketplace and eBay — stolen bikes are often listed quickly.
  • Notify your bike register (BikeRegister or Immobilise) so your bike is flagged as stolen.
  • Contact your home or cycle insurance provider if you have cover.
